Sciatica is any pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, usually due to a tear in the disc. When the sciatic nerve is mechanically compressed or irritated, it can lead to pain, numbness and/or a tingling sensation radiating from the low back , down one or both legs to your foot and toes. The pain can range from mild to very painful, often aggravated by sneezing, coughing or prolonged sitting. sciatica may also include muscle weakness in the affected leg. You should immediately call 999 for an ambulance if you experience loss of sensation between your legs and around your buttocks and/or loss of bladder or bowel control. Although rare, these symptoms can be a sign of a serious condition called cauda equina syndrome.
